Lunesta Detox

Lunesta is the brand name for a drug called eszopiclone. Eszopiclone is used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep). Eszopiclone is in a class of medications called hypnotics. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow sleep. Lunesta can be habit-forming and may require detoxification to get sober.

Eszopiclone may cause serious or possibly life-threatening sleep behaviors. Some people who took eszopiclone got out of bed and drove their cars, prepared and ate food, had sex, made phone calls, sleep-walked, or were involved in other activities while not fully awake. After they woke up, these people were unable to remember what they had done. Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual sleep behavior while taking eszopiclone. [1]

Lunesta Eszopiclone” side effects

Eszopiclone may cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking eszopiclone and get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; nausea, vomiting; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity while not fully awake and later had no memory of it. This may include walking, driving, or making phone calls. If this happens to you, stop taking eszopiclone and call your doctor right away.

Lunesta detox can be very uncomfortable and causes many people to relapse to relieve unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Anxiety, depression, aggression, agitation
  • Memory problems, unusual thoughts or behavior
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself
  • Confusion, hallucinations (hearing or seeing things)
  • Unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Rash

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur****

  • Day-time drowsiness, dizziness, “hangover” feeling
  • Headache, anxiety
  • Dry mouth
  • Cold or flu symptoms such as fever, body aches, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose

Severe Side Effects that Need Immediate Response

  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Feeling that the throat is closing
  • Hoarseness

Some of these events may result in serious injuries, including death. Anyone who has this kind of experience while using eszopiclone should stop using the drug and contact their healthcare provider.

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

An overdose of eszopiclone can be fatal, especially when it is taken together with other medications that can cause drowsiness.

  • Drowsiness
  • Coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)

What Should I Avoid While Taking Eszopiclone?

Avoid taking eszopiclone during travel, such as sleeping on an airplane. You may be awakened before the effects of the medication have worn off. Amnesia (forgetfulness) is more common if you do not get at least 8 hours of sleep after taking eszopiclone. Avoid drinking alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death could occur.

Avoid taking eszopiclone within 1 hour after eating a high-fat or heavy meal. This will make it harder for your body to absorb the medication.

Eszopiclone can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy in the morning after taking eszopiclone. Until you know how this medicine will affect you during waking hours, be careful if you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Because the symptoms and severity of Lunesta withdrawal vary and can be unpredictable, users are urged to consult a doctor before quitting use—especially those with moderate to severe Lunesta addictions.

For most people, withdrawal symptoms begin to appear within one to two days after the last dose of Lunesta. The initial symptoms are usually anxiety and insomnia. Symptoms of Lunesta withdrawal will typically peak anywhere from three to seven days. Within about three weeks, symptoms become milder and eventually go away for most people. However, if you are among the ones who are heavily dependent upon Lunesta, ongoing withdrawal symptoms may occur for up to eight weeks after taking the last dose of the drug.

Lunesta Withdrawal Timeline

Days 1-2: Withdrawal begins within the first 48 hours after ending the use of Lunesta. Intense insomnia and anxiety are often the first symptoms to show up.

Days 3-7: Symptoms peak during this time. The user’s rebound symptoms should begin to lessen after a few days. Sleeping troubles may still occur after rebound symptoms have gone away, but the problem will be much less intense. Users may also feel irritable, fatigued, and nauseous.

Days 8-21: Over the next two weeks, symptoms will fade and become increasingly milder. Some users may continue having sleeping problems.

Days 22+: If any symptoms remain, they should be very mild. Some users experience PAWS after the acute phase of withdrawal has ended. These symptoms peak four to eight weeks after the last dose was taken.

A planned Lunesta detox is the best way to deal with your withdrawal symptoms. Many people try to detox on their own in their own homes. Unfortunately, they may end up experiencing even worse side effects that last over a longer period without medical assistance. Most of the severe withdrawal symptoms we have listed come from individuals who tried to detox on their own. Instead of making things better, it progressively made things worse. Therefore, medical detox is beneficial.
